It’s not quite bubblegum but it’s hard to take an adult theme like scifi and completely knock it down for kids. Some movies you might want to look into Steamboy and Naussica and the Valley of the Wind. Of course I recommend you screen to your own standards as ours are sure to differ. The Final Fantasy movie was another scifi type movie, though it had a good deal of violence.

I too yearn for more intelligent sci-fi that isn’t just some prelude to sex scene.
