I like the subtitles thing a lot as it makes for a more accurate setting (and makes the movie easily “internationalized” as any language is easily put in there). As far as the gore goes, it’s much the same situation as with the D-Day landing in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” – the reality was actually much worse. For the movie “Saving Private Ryan”, guys who had been there at the D-Day landings were brought in as consultants to try and make it accurate. Even though the landing scene couldn’t achieve what happened in actuality, just what was possible for the studio to make would have made the film x-rated for violence. So, it was watered down a lot. What the movie-going public saw was nothing compared to what really happened(/happens). Same with “The Passion of the Christ” – the reality of Jesus’ scourging and cruxifiction was actually much worse than could be portrayed. How about that, eh?
