Hey, you want to start the campaign earlier than ever before? This is what you get. I have no idea why the candidates started so early this time around — I suspect Democrats wanted to capitalize on Bush fatigue as soon as possible — but the landscape now will almost certainly be nothing like the landscape before the first primaries. It just raises the bar to entry; those who are the richest and/or have the richest friends can stay in for the extremely long haul. Is that what we want to have as the first determiner of our presidential choices?

Fred Thompson’s waiting game may not be such a bad idea.
